Sales and Marketing Acting Like Babies

I was on vacation in Cancun over spring break earlier this year, and while I sipped on a delicious classic-style margarita I launched the YouTube app on my iPhone® to catch up on my guilty pleasure — Game of Thrones. I not only loved watching the show, but I also loved “The Making of…” videos posted on YouTube by the HBO team. If you’re a GoT fan, too, consider going back and watching some of the Game Revealed episodes posted on YouTube by the creators. Seeing the amazing sets and work involved to produce the show just might help you get over any hard feelings around Season Eight and the finale.

Oh, you’re not a Game of Thrones fan? Don’t worry, this post isn’t about that. Why the mention, then? Well, when I pulled up the YouTube app, for some reason the suggestion feed featured a video about two twin baby boys talking to each other in gibberish. It was adorable. An idea was born.

Blame it on the margaritas, or the Game of Thrones power struggle-themed content in my head, but I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool to make a version of this video of these two boys and add subtitles like it’s a CMO and CRO having a playful power struggle?”

Yes, it probably was the margaritas.

Anyway, I finally got around to making it over the Memorial Day weekend and here it is. When I posted it on LinkedIn, I was not sure if people would get my sense of humor, but when I noticed all the comments, likes, and the 6,000+ views by the next morning, I guess I’m not the only one who finds the typical banter between Sales and Marketing “entertaining.”

Feel free to show this video at your next Sales and Marketing meeting to kick things off with some lighthearted content.

So, what do you think? Did I accomplish my goal of revealing some specific character personas and traits in a short, comedic video? I hope it showed you just how hardworking, frantic, and approval-seeking Brad (Marketing) is and how in the moment, playful, and affable Jake (Sales) is. Are they as deep as George R.R. Martin’s characters in A Song of Ice and Fire (aka Game of Thrones)? Ah, no. While only one can win the Game of Thrones, Sales and Marketing are on the same side. My goal is to make us laugh a bit at the Sales and Marketing dynamic and seek to foster more and more collaboration between these teams and leaders.
